Blue Star Fund-raiser for The Ali Forney Center

9pm at The Bowery Electric 327 Bowery No Cover

Donation Jar at DJ booth 100% of donations

and the party’s bar profits will go to The Ali Forney Center.

In less than 48 hours, we will be partying.  Try to keep it together.  It might be hard to contain yourself if you start thinking about how delightful the space is at The Bowery Electric.  In fact, it will be pretty tough if you’re reminded how much tastier drinks can be during a happy hour (9-10pm).  Lastly, if during this thoughtful time, it somehow occurs to you that you might have Friday off and this is all for a well-deserving charity–well just be careful.  We’re really excited too, but just try not to become Oprah’s studio audience on her Favorite Things episode.  For safety’s sake.  Plus if you tear your shirt off now, what will you have left to tear off in celebration later?

We wanted to post more about the organization Blue Star is Fund-raising for this month, The Ali Forney Center.

Posted with permission from their website:

As the visibility of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) people grows in our society, more and more LGBT teens are finding the courage to come out of the closet.

Tragically, as many as 25% of these teens are rejected by their families, and many end up homeless on the streets. Homeless LGBT teens are more likely than straight homeless teens to be subjected to violence on the streets, and in the homeless shelter system. They suffer from inordinate rates of mental illness, trauma, HIV infection and substance abuse.

The Ali Forney Center (AFC) was started in June of 2002 in response to the lack of safe shelter for LGBT youth in New York City. We are committed to providing these young people with safe, dignified, nurturing environments where their needs can be met, and where they can begin to put their lives back together.

AFC is dedicated to promoting awareness of the plight of homeless LGBT youth in the United States with the goal of generating responses on local and national levels from government funders, foundations, and the LGBT community.

Who was Ali Forney?

Ali Forney was a homeless queer teen who was forced to live on the streets of New York during the 1990s. Ali was dedicated to the safety of other homeless queer youth; he was a committed HIV prevention worker, and aggressively advocated that the NYPD investigate a series of murders of the homeless queer youth he had befriended. Ali was an inspiration to those who knew him.

In December of 1997, Ali was murdered on the streets. His tragic death called attention to the atrocious conditions for homeless LGBT youth in New York. Ali’s murderer has never been identified.

BLUE STAR, APRIL 21

This party’s been on hiatus for the past couple of months, but guess what? Like floral prints and platform sandals, it’s baaaaack. Blue Star’s goal remains the same: provide a hip, casual party where women who like women (and their buds) can drink, dance and chat over music that won’t split one’s eardrums. The venue, however, is new: the rock-styled Bowery Electric, which features a long, sleek bar and performance space. Make a friend or two while you benefit a good cause: this month, the promoters will be donating the night’s proceeds to the Ali Forney Center, which protects LGBTQ youth from the harm of homelessness and supports them in becoming safe and independent as they move from adolescence to adulthood. We can all drink to that!

It’s been a long time. We shouldn’t have left you without a dope beat to step to—but we did, mainly because we’re not rappers. Well, okay some of us are rappers, but we’re trying to downplay that so we can segue into other careers and become multi-hyphenates. Namely, we’re interested in the rapper/extreme segway rider game.

I guess what we’re trying to say is: we’re back.

Nice Segway.

During our sabbatical we thought long and hard about Blue Star.

One of our favorite parties last year was the November fundraiser for The Trevor Project.  We started thinking, why shouldn’t all the parties be fundraisers?  There is really no reason that having a great night out should be completely disconnected from your other interests. There’s nothing wrong with fun for fun’s sake, but when it’s so easy to make it something more—why wouldn’t we?

Believe me when I say, we are riding a very low horse (it might be a burro). A party won’t cure the world’s ills but it might raise money that allows our local shelter to pay an extra staffer or feed fifty more people.  This is more about connecting one of our priorities with some others. That is why we are choosing local charities, because the amount of money raised by a single party could have a great impact on a smaller charity.  Also, we’d like to give them one more venue to get their message out.  We are accepting nominations for local charities to support.  Email nominations to bluestarpartynyc@gmail.com

The original mission for Blue Star was to provide another option in the nightlife scene for women who like women (and their friends), because we felt the scene was limited.  Limited, literally by the number of bars in Manhattan (three!) and limited also by the “exclusive” style of many parties.

So, we’re offering a party for everyone where you can wear whatever the hell you want and have a conversation, or dance your pants off to raise money for charity.  Not because we’re better—just because no one else is doing this exact thing.  Or if they are, tell us about it, so we can go too. This is addition, not competition.

Our kickoff party is scheduled for Thursday April 21, 2011 at 9pm.  We have a new location and a new charity to announce. Stay tuned.

Sooner than you think

We will return in April at a new venue.  It is going to be pretty amazing, so we thought we’d give you some time to prepare.  If you haven’t already, you should start training now.

Formal announcement coming soon…

What am I gonna do with all this paella?

Okay, so we don’t have any actual paella.

But we do have music, booze, people, and a delightful bar on east 6th street to house all of those things.

You really have to come. We can’t eat all this candy by ourselves.  Seriously.  We just went to the dentist yesterday and got in big trouble.
